In my English 1A class we were talking about how Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings points out the "white Beauty" standard. Well back then before WWII all the way back then! there was this crazy idea that if you ere white you were better than everyone else! Crazy right? We are lucky we do not have to deal with that now... Well, kind of... not as much...
Sad thing is, we still deal with it. Today we do not point it out as much as they would back when Maya Angelou was a child but the media does it indirectly. Today woman are constantly being told that they need to be 5'11'' and 117 lb... It is explained well in this video

My god! Marilyn Monroe was not even a size 0 she was a size nine and let me tell you she was HOT!!! Woman are also told that being white is right... You may ask how! Well look at all the magazine we see today or the build boards! We see dark skinned people with straight hair and blond and lighter skin than what they are and they are all skinny, if they are not in real life they are constantly being photo shopped. So like before in the 1930s they were told that being white is the most perfect look, but if we think of science... white skin has a higher percentage to suffer from skin cancer... To be completely honest I usually do not see the difference if the person is nice and well mannered it does not matter what color they are
