Essay Expansion

For the expansion of my essay I would like to work on my Essay #1: critical reading of advertising, where I wrote about Men's Men and Women's Women by Seven Craig. I would like to bring in a commercial made by FIFA that was more directed towards women then it was directed towards men. This can be a bit of a challenge because most FIFA commercials are directed towards men. If I do find one I would like to compare both commercials. If that does not work I can also find a commercial for all 4 kinds of commercials he speaks about in his article, if I do that I would have to look at all types of sports not just FIFA. I will try to explain each concept and incorporate what Craig tried to explain in his article as well.

Along with this I will use the key words: men's commercials, Women's commercials, sexuality, masculinity, famine, society expectations of women, expectations of men.

War.

Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried has me at the edge of my seat every time I open it. I think of myself carrying 100lbs on my back every day, of the humidity of Vietnam, of watching people constant die. Not having the chance to see my family for months, or reading the letter they sent me over and over again.
It always reminds me of Forest Gump and how he got to see it rain for weeks. I can only imagine how it felt to live the best part of a person's life in those conditions.
O'Brien points out that they were all children. How would a mother feel thinking of her child being shot at, injured or dead? I am not a mother but to have an image like that of my brother would hurt too much.
Funny how war comes to be, how it is fought by the men who just started to live, but authorized by men who really do not see how the world works.
It was very tragic for those who went to Vietnam, and were treated horribly once they came home. Was it really their fault?
Who is to blame for war?

In my English 1A class we were talking about how Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings points out the "white Beauty" standard. Well back then before WWII all the way back then! there was this crazy idea that if you ere white you were better than everyone else! Crazy right? We are lucky we do not have to deal with that now... Well, kind of... not as much...
Sad thing is, we still deal with it. Today we do not point it out as much as they would back when Maya Angelou was a child but the media does it indirectly. Today woman are constantly being told that they need to be 5'11'' and 117 lb... It is explained well in this video
Skin color

My god! Marilyn Monroe was not even a size 0 she was a size nine and let me tell you she was HOT!!! Woman are also told that being white is right... You may ask how! Well look at all the magazine we see today or the build boards! We see dark skinned people with straight hair and blond and lighter skin than what they are and they are all skinny, if they are not in real life they are constantly being photo shopped. So like before in the 1930s they were told that being white is the most perfect look, but if we think of science... white skin has a higher percentage to suffer from skin cancer... To be completely honest I usually do not see the difference if the person is nice and well mannered it does not matter what color they are

Being part of two Worlds

After reading chapter 23 in Maya Angelou I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings, I did not feel as lost as I usually do at my age. It was towards at the end when she remembers how wonderful it is to be who she is. "I was no longer simply a member of the class of 1940; I was a proud member of the wonderful, beautiful Negro race." Once I read that the memories of grade school came to me all over again. All the times that I was rejected from my Mexican race because I look white and all the times I was rejected from the white race because I am a Mexican. At times I would wonder why my parents chose to come to this country where we were never wanted. At worst times I even wanted to be white, and rejected my heritage. I always thought there was something wrong with me but the older I became the more I realized I am wonderful! The more I experienced the more I recognized that I was the best part of both worlds. I did what it is normal to do in the American traditions, like driving at 16, or having a big party at 15, and at 18 (21 is next!!). I can also do all the great things that my Mexican heritage teaches; like cooking, speaking two languages, having the beautiful body of a Latina, and a bold attitude that gets me everywhere I have wanted to go.
Like Maya I was lost and by little actions from others overcame that mind set, like she starts doing later in the story I started and still look for ways to over come all the judgment people can throw your way. It reassured me that I was not the only on in this world that suffered from it at one point in life.

Friend test.

"We should run through the forests
We should swim in the streams
We should laugh we should cry we should love we should dream
We should stare at the stars and not just at screens
You should hear what I’m saying and know what it means to-...

Yeah we wish we were happier, thinner and fitter
We wish we weren’t losers and liars and quitters
We want something more not just nasty and bitter
We want something real not just Facebook and twitter
It’s the meaning of life and it’s streamed live on YouTube
But I bet Gangnam Style would still get more views
We’re scared of drowning, of flying and shooters
But we’re all slowly dying in front of fucking computers."
(Scare Away the dark by Passenger)

Today in my English class we talked about how people are very attached to social media. We had articles to read before hand, we discussed the one by Ian Daly Virtual Population Isn't Cool- It's Pathetic and most people who spoke were the one who disagreed with the author. They disagreed with social media being useless. Some of my classmates felt that social media brings us together, it helps us keep connected, it helps us meet people and helps us socialize... I disagree very much with them, like the lyrics of the song I posted above, I feel like we are loosing the art of communication and the need for adventure and happiness because we have an artificial source on our laps.
I agree with Daly when he say "take a good long look at your list of friends list and ask yourself how many of these people would meet you for a beer- or how many you would actually want to meet for a beer." Ok guys lets be honest... nobody does that!!! Ok I lied maybe not "NEVER" but maybe 5% of the time it MIGHT happen.... most likely not. Honestly if you think those people are you friend try this: piss them off just a bit, push there button, disagree with them. When you think of a friends think of the as bridges. When you make a bridge you should try it out and see if it is stable right? If those people are "friends" they should hold up right? 1 out of the 600 friends would survive right or maybe 5 or maybe 20. But I bet you that the ones who did hold up on the test were the ones who actually knew you for years, those who really have had memories with. Well now that you eliminate the fact that most of those people will not help you out, they won't be there when you cry, when you loose those who matter for you, why does their opinion matter? Why do you care if you get their like if they really don't care about you when you are down... We spend so much time on those website that we forget how to truly make friends. When you are at a cafĂ© I bet not many of us know how to start a conversation with a stranger, we are used to just send a friend request. I hope most if not all disagree with me so you can go out there and prove me wrong! If you do prove me wrong, try talking to people in person and see how it is much more difficult but much more fulfilling when you make a real friend not a virtual one.

TV AD

Summery:
In chapter two of the book They Say I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein's it is talked of how to summarize. It is explained that one needs to put themselves in the writers shoes. They also explain that during the summery one is not to show emotions because one would sound very bias. The author explains that the point is to "suspend one's own convictions" They allude to how acts do so to be able to "'become'" the character they have to act. It is explained that a writer has to grab the readers attention because if one doesn't then t is what he authors believe as 'the closest clichĂ© syndrome." It is explained to always use what others have said as a tool, it is important to know what the person you are quoting is trying to say. If one does not do so then the writer only ends up talking to no one because they loose their readers.
Response:
As I read this I though it would be a good idea to practice by summarizing this section in this blog. I understand what the chapter was trying to teach. In high school we summarize more than teachers want us to. We never really understand how to look at different perspectives, I feel that is because we can be very selfish at times. We forget that to make a bigger statement is better to know when to actually include our opinion instead of putting how we feel about the writer thought the whole time we try to explain what the writer was saying. At times I catch myself including my opinion because I feel like the summer can be very dry. By writing this summery myself I had a chance to practice what the author was trying to teach. Before writing the summery I need to understand what the author is saying before trying to put it in my own words, as any one who read this book will learn after reading this chapter.
